The Pattern of the Thing Precedes the Thing is an exploration of the concept of patterns. A pattern can be defined as something that can be repeated; that has a regular and intelligible sequence; or that can function as a guide.

The works in this series are made from an assortment of paper and cardboard that has been hole-punched to yield dots. The arrangement of the dots within these works is at once both intentional and random, and confounds the legibility of any patterns within their design.

These works were exhibited as part of the group exhibition Paperlicious at Red Gallery, Melbourne.
